Weekends are supposed to be for recuperating right? Distancing oneself from nine to five drudgery and recharging our systems with plenty of exercise, healthy food and much needed sleep. Then why do so many of us knowingly misuse this time by cramming in as much OTT revelry as possible? Seriously, as if receiving word that the world is about to end, from the moment we leave work on Friday we choose to fling ourselves down a debauched path littered with drive-thru burgers, parties and encounters with the opposite sex that – clouded by numerous shots and tipples – usually make us writhe with embarrassment when we come to on Sunday afternoon. Of course lost in the moment this all seems like time well spent but when we arrive back at the office on Monday morning, battered and bloodshot, it’s clear that our bodies weren’t designed to field 48-hours of non-stop abuse. The new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, on the other hand, seems to revel in it.

One of the latest additions to the local Mitsubishi lineup, the new Pajero Sport is the ultimate weekend warrior; a hefty piece of off-roading equipment that’s always too eager to trade the boredom of tarred city streets for a bit of backroad rough and tumble. Because if you strip aside that handsome metal skin, admire the spec list, you’ll notice this machine harbors all the rugged goodness that has made Mitsubishi famous amongst the bundu-bashing fraternity. For starters, sharing its underpinnings with the badass Mitsubishi Triton bakkie, there’s plenty of ground clearance; enough to give the Sport the legs to tackle most of what its red-blooded owners would ever dream of taking on. Backed up with a low-range transfer case and a full differential locking system, all this technical firepower allows the Mitsubishi to crawl up, along and across Mother Nature’s ugly bits with ease. From the battered, rain-eroded country roads around Buffelspoort to the far more technical terrors offered up by the local 4×4 course, I found out that this SUV certainly has no qualms about getting its boots muddied.

Luckily the Sport’s taste for dirt hasn’t hampered its on-road credentials one bit; the ride quality of this giant being complying and forgiving enough to deal with the mundanity of anyone’s weekly commute. Inside the cabin things are surprisingly comfortable too, those large leather seats making long journeys an absolute pleasure. Unfortunately, hooked up to a four-speed automatic gearbox, I did find the Mitsubishi’s 3.2-litre turbodiesel to be something of weak link in an otherwise pretty strong chain. For although it’s certainly good enough for plodding along the rough stuff at snails pace, out on the highway and around town surrounded by traffic this oil-burner makes the Pajero Sport feel strangely anemic; especially when compared to its Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest rivals. Still, despite its fairly lackluster straight-line punch, the Mitsubishi manages to one-up its competitors with a more modern and, I think, eye pleasing interior; one that doesn’t look like it was styled by a beige-crazed accountant in the late ‘90s. Included in the price you also get a decent amount of standard kit including leather, an MP3 CD player (with satellite controls on the wheel), air-con and four airbags. Finished off with generous passenger legroom and a gargantuan boot – the floor of which hides an extra row of pop-up seats – the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a handsome lifestyle vehicle that comes to the party. From the workaday toil to all those wild weekends of whim and adventure, this neat package has everything you need to live life extra large. Enjoy responsibly.
